Torsion vs Extension Springs: What Is on Your Carrollton Door, and Does It Matter?

Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the door and twist; extension springs run alongside the horizontal tracks and stretch. Torsion systems last longer, lift more evenly and fail more safely, which is why nearly every door installed in the last 25 years uses them. Many older Carrollton doors still run extension springs, which is fine with safety cables.

How to tell which system you have in five seconds

Stand inside the garage with the door closed and look up at the wall directly above the opening. If you see a steel shaft running the width of the door with one or two tightly wound coil springs on it, plus a drum at each end, you have torsion springs. If the space above the door is empty and instead there are long, skinny springs stretched along each horizontal track near the ceiling, you have extension springs.

There is a third, less common setup: a torsion spring hidden inside a round tube above the door. That is a torsion system too, usually a low-cost variant found on some builder doors from the late 1990s onward. It works on the same principle but cannot be serviced the same way, so mention the tube if you call about it.

How each spring type does its job

Both systems counterbalance the door so the opener only has to guide it. A double steel door here typically weighs 150 to 250 pounds; a good spring system carries roughly 95 percent of that, which is why a balanced door can be lifted with one hand. The difference is in how the energy gets stored.

A torsion spring is wound around the shaft when the door is down. As the door rises, the spring unwinds and turns the shaft, the drums at each end wind up the lift cables, and the cables pull the bottom corners of the door up together. Because a single shaft drives both cables, both sides of the door rise in lockstep.

An extension spring stretches as the door closes. Each side has its own spring, anchored to the rear track hanger at one end and connected through a pulley and cable to the bottom bracket at the other. As the door opens, each spring contracts and pulls its own side up. Two independent springs means two independent forces, and when they age at different rates the door starts to climb crooked.

Why older Carrollton doors run extension springs

Extension springs were the budget choice during the building boom that took Carrollton from about 14,000 people in 1970 to more than 80,000 in 1990. They cost less, needed no special winding tools, and fit garages with very little room above the door. A production builder putting up hundreds of houses along Frankford Road chose them by the truckload.

Those doors are now 35 to 50 years old. Many have been re-doored once, and a good installer switches to torsion at that point. Plenty have not, and we still find original extension setups on single-car and two-car doors in the older parts of the city, often with springs stretched well past their design length and no safety cables at all.

That is not a reason to panic. A correctly sized extension system with safety cables and healthy pulleys is a perfectly serviceable door. It is a reason to know what you have, because the failure modes are different and the maintenance is a little different too.

Safety cables: the part that matters most on extension springs

Every extension spring should have a steel safety cable running through its center, anchored to the track hanger at the back and the track bracket at the front. When an extension spring breaks it goes from stretched to slack in an instant, and without that cable the broken half can whip across the garage with enough force to crack a windshield or worse. The cable simply catches it.

Safety cables have been standard practice for decades, but doors installed before the mid-1990s frequently do not have them, and even some later ones lost them during a sloppy repair. Look at each spring from the floor. If you can see a thin cable threaded straight through the coils, you are covered. If the spring hangs on its own, adding cables is a quick, inexpensive job and the single most important upgrade an extension door can get.

Do not adjust either spring type yourself. Extension springs look approachable because there is no winding involved, but they are under full tension whenever the door is closed. Changing hooks, moving the anchor point or replacing a spring must be done with the door fully open and clamped, and the pulleys and cables inspected at the same time. If a spring has already broken, leave the door alone and call for spring replacement.

Should you convert extension springs to torsion?

Converting makes sense in three situations, and the cost usually lands in the $300 to $500 range including the shaft, drums, bearings and springs. It is worth it when replacing a broken extension spring on a door you plan to keep, when the door has become heavy and crooked, or when upgrading to a heavier insulated door.

A conversion needs headroom. Standard torsion hardware wants roughly 12 inches between the top of the door opening and the ceiling or the lowest obstruction. Garages with less than that can sometimes use low-headroom torsion kits, and a technician can measure in a minute. Where there truly is no room, a fresh extension system with safety cables and new pulleys is the honest recommendation.

What a conversion buys you: a door that rises level, an opener that works less, a spring that can be upgraded to 25,000 or more cycles, and a failure mode that keeps the broken spring on the shaft instead of loose in the garage. On the older streets between Trinity Mills Road and the north side of the city, where many doors are on their second opener but still their first spring system, it is one of the better-value upgrades we do.

If you are keeping extension springs

Keep them in good shape and they will serve you. Confirm the safety cables are there. Look at the pulleys at least twice a year; the small sheaves wear grooves and the bearings seize, which frays the cable running over them. Lubricate the springs lightly with a silicone or white lithium spray so they do not rust at the hooks, which is where extension springs usually break.

Replace extension springs in pairs, always. Two springs of different ages pull with different force, and the door climbs crooked until a roller jumps the track.
